The University of Maryland welcomes Dr. Juan Burke, who will join the architecture program this fall as an assistant professor. Dr. Burke, who is currently an assistant professor at SUNY Alfred, brings substantial expertise as a professional and a scholar to UMD in both architecture and historic preservation. He previously taught as an assistant professor at the School or Architecture and Design, Technological Institute of Monterrey in Mexico. As a practitioner of both architecture and historic preservation, he has collaborated with firms on three continents and was instrumental in preservation efforts of several historic sites in his native Puebla, Mexico. He is currently at work on a book titled Of Heavenly Constructors: Urbanism and Architecture in Viceregal Puebla de los Angeles, Mexico.
Well-versed in the architectural and urban production of the early modern periods, as well as the modern movement of the 20th century—particularly in Mexico and Latin America—Dr. Burke will fill an important role for UMD’s architecture program.
“I am extremely pleased to have Dr. Burke join our growing architecture program here at UMD,” said Interim Dean Dr. Don Linebaugh. “He brings a very unique background in architectural history and architectural design practice to our program and will greatly enrich how our students interpret architecture, heritage and the world.”
Dr. Burke holds a Ph.D. in the Theory and History of Architecture and M.Arch from McGill University, an MA in Museum Studies from the University of Gothenburg, a graduate degree in historical preservation from the University of Alcalá de Henares, in Madrid, Spain, and a B.Arch from the State University of Puebla.
