The Presidential Leadership Scholars program (PLS) has named University of Maryland Historic Preservation alumna Rachel Brown (M.H.P. ’12) to its sixth annual class of scholars. The Presidential Leadership Scholars program brings together a collection of diverse and established leaders to learn from the presidential experiences of George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Lyndon B. Johnson. Through interactions and discussions with former presidents, key former administration officials, business and civic leaders and leading academics, PLS scholars put novel approaches to leadership, collaboration and idea exchange to work on a personal leadership project intended to solve a challenge in their community, country or world.

Brown, who is a senior policy advisor for Native American Affairs at the Bureau of Reclamation in Washington, D.C., was one of 60 educators, public servants and professionals chosen to participate in the class of 2020. She has previously worked for the National Park Service and the White House Office of Management and Budget.

Brown’s PLS project will explore ways that federal agencies and non-profits can work together to better serve the water resource needs of National American Tribal Nations.

“This is a well-deserved honor for Rachel, who has been a tireless public servant and advocate for Native American communities,” says Dean of the University of Maryland’s School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation Donald Linebaugh. “We are thrilled for her and this achievement!”
