Towards the end of a difficult spring semester in 1985, Chris McCabe (B.S. Architecture ’85, M.ARCH ’87) was at a crossroads. Having studied architecture at UMD for four years, she was uncertain as to whether she had the talent and confidence needed to tackle the Master’s program in architecture. For Chris, the announcement of Professor Tom Schumacher’s inaugural Study Abroad Program in Rome was not only good timing, it proved to be life-changing. She recalls the summer experience a turning point in her academic career, propelling her into a successful graduate school experience and later, a valued studio critic and fulfilling career as a practicing architect.

“The Rome program was eye-opening,” says Chris. “We were immersed in this amazing city, rich in history and culture. Tom’s trusting guidance allowed us to independently explore this truly urban city. We discovered a new sense of initiative, learning to journal, sketch, analyze, critique read and understand the facade, palazzo, courtyard, street and the meaning of urban room. Tom was truly at home there, and he took immense pleasure in sharing his Roma with our modest group of 23 students.”

Tom’s legacy of a culture-studded active learning adventure continues today—almost 30 years since that first trip across the Atlantic—and has helped hundreds of students connect on a deep level with the beauty and history of architecture. Through the Thomas L. Schumacher Memorial Endowment,  Tom’s vision continues to help architecture students afford such a memorable experience.
