Clinical Professor of Real Estate Development Dr. Margaret McFarland has been awarded the 2018 Richard T. Ely Distinguished Educator Award from Lambda Alpha International (LAI). This distinguished honor was presented on April 28, 2018 in Baltimore by Dr. James Fawcett, International Awards Chair.
McFarland was nominated by the Baltimore Chapter of LAI and cited for her achievements in education and land economics in Maryland, the region and beyond, including her visionary leadership of the University of Maryland’s Colvin Institute for Real Estate Development. McFarland also serves as Editor-in-Chief, Real Estate Review.

The announcement was made by Melvin Freeman, President, Baltimore Chapter of LAI – Lambda Alpha International, and James D. Fawcett, PhD, FLAI, LAI International Awards Chair.
Margaret McFarland has notable achievements as an educator and practitioner in the field of land economics, housing and the related real estate industry, in both the public and private sectors, for more than four decades. McFarland is an accomplished author of both academic and professional publications; regulations published and adopted by the District of Columbia; corporate governance and administrative documents, and litigation briefs and documents.
“Lambda Alpha was founded at Northwestern University almost 90 years ago by students of one of the preeminent leaders in land economics, Professor Richard T. Ely with the purpose of recognizing individuals who have made a significant contribution to the field of land economics,” said James D. Fawcett, PhD, FLAI, LAI International Awards Chair. “Consistent with its background in academia, the Ely Award recognizes distinguished educators in the field. Without a doubt, Professor Ely would be delighted that the award in his name is this year presented to Professor McFarland.”
