A team of graduate students from UMD’s School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation has landed one of four finalist slots in the fifteenth annual ULI Hines Student Competition, edging out 118 teams from 60 of the finest and most prestigious graduate-level programs in the United States and Canada. The ULI Hines Student Competition challenges interdisciplinary teams of graduate students to create a dynamic design and development solution for a real large-scale site in just two weeks. UMD will go toe-to-toe with Carnegie Mellon University, Université Laval and University of Texas at Austin for the Chicago finals competition in April. The winning team will walk away with $50,000, with $5000 going towards the school.
While ULI Hines is an ideas competition, it is part of the Urban Land Institute’s (ULI) continued mission to engage young professionals in collaborative solutions, responsible land use and creating better communities. Student teams must comprise at least three disciplines, a nod to ULI’s efforts to promote interdisciplinary solutions to urban challenges. This year’s competition asked teams to devise a comprehensive design and development program for North Branch Industrial Corridor in Chicago, Il. UMD’s proposal, entitled “NorthWorks,” re-conceptualizes the industrial “heart” of Chicago through three themes—connect, adapt and engage—reorienting the site to meet 21st century jobs, capitalizing on its riverfront location and connecting community through dynamic transportation initiatives.
Team Maryland is: Pedro H. Camargo de Alb. Sanchez (M.Arch); Jennifer Chorosevic, Team Leader (Dual Masters in Architecture and Real Estate Development); Peter Cunningham (Masters of Architecture); Daniel Green (Masters of Real Estate Development); and Alexis Robinson (Masters of Community Planning). The team’s advisors are Professor Matthew Bell, FAIA and Professor Margaret McFarland, JD, Clinical Professor of Real Estate Development.
