Professors Isabelle Gournay and Ralph Bennett selected projects from across the country to serve as examples of innovative, well-designed affordable housing and developed the layout and script of the exhibition.
However, uneven policymaking and funding of affordable housing have been, architects continue to produce innovative and humane solutions. The exhibition includes 18 examples from many parts of the country, accommodating many populations in many configurations, financed by myriad funding sources obtained by many kinds of sponsors. We believe it remains an inspiring tribute to those efforts and a challenge to all of us to do more and better.
The exhibition made its debut at the National Building Museum in 2004, then traveled to Philadelphia, Hartford, Richmond, Atlanta, Chicago, Seattle, Phoenix, Dallas, and Minneapolis. Finally, it has come home to College Park. While this is the exhibition's last planned stop, the National Building Museum website will continue to offer information about both the included projects and many other national and regional affordable housing projects.
The Washington-area examples were identified and described by students in Professor Bennett and Gournay's Housing Seminar at the School. The Urban Land Institute produced an excellent catalog of the exhibition in 2005.
