This year ’s annual Carl M. Ruskin Lecturer is the renowned George Galster, Professor of Urban Aairs at Wayne State University in Detroit , who will discuss his compelling study of the city of Detroit in “Driving Detroit: The Quest for Respect in the Motor City.”
A fifth generation Detroiter, Prof. Galster will talk about how—within a half century—Detroit went from being an industrial powerhouse to a city that lost nearly half of its population and became a poster child for urban decay, crime and racial division. He will explain “how geography, local government structure and social forces created a housing development system that produced sprawl at the fringe and abandonment at the core” of this once-great city. Dr. Galster will also highlight factors that are leading to the city’s reinvention.
