Architects are trained in the research, design, and management of assemblies. We bring things together.

We bring stakeholders together. We bring sections of the building code together. We bring together narratives about history and visions of the future. We bring two lines together at a right angle. We call for the joining of 2x4 with 2x4 or thermal barrier with cladding. We synthesize media and technology in search of new types of space. with cladding. We synthesize media and technology in search of new types of space. As architects and architectural thinkers, we assemble ideas, people, and materials As architects and architectural thinkers, we assemble ideas, people, and materials together.

However, at this moment, we undeniably exist on a cultural, political, environmental, and moral fault line. We live in a time of fissure, distance, and shear. The landscape of disaster demands that we understand how we got here. While we work landscape of disaster demands that we understand how we got h to understand the broad and deep roots of these issues, we must ask: How can our discipline be held accountable to work with honesty and diligence towards a more diverse, equitable, just, and sustainable built environment?

We live in a time of complex faults, but we are conveners, assemblers, and joiners. This semester, we aim to reflect on the loss, fissure, and inequities amplifying around us. We hope to understand the constructive paths forward from fault to ownership, us.
