Come explore the disciplines of architecture, urban planning, historic preservation, economics and real estate development in Havana, Cuba.*

This 3-weeks interdisciplinary course offered in January of 2022, will examine the intersections of these disciplines, including how they are manifested in the arts, culture, and society.

Havana is one of the oldest cities in the hemisphere, having just celebrated its 500th anniversary. The course will provide the opportunity for the students to intensely interact with Cuban experts in each discipline, some directly from Havana.*

We are inviting students with interest in the disciplines of architecture, urban planning, historic preservation, economics and real estate development to take the course.

The course will be highly interactive with extensive opportunities to be part of a participatory learning environment with a diverse team of instructors and guests.

Students will first learn about the rich and complex contextual past and present framework of each of the disciplines, weaving in the arts and culture. Then, students will apply what they have learned to group projects in specific neighborhoods in Havana.

The Instructor Team includes Reemberto Rodriguez, a Cuban-born long-time practitioner of all four disciplines focused on the course with recent emphasis in placemaking and community organizing; Gerrit Knapp, Director of UMD’s National Center for Smart Growth; Isabel Rigol, retired architecture professor and prolific speaker from the University of Havana; Manuel Ochoa, Economic Development Consultant; and Manela Diez, a facilitator of family and architectural journeys to Cuba. This Instructor Team will be augmented by virtual participation of practitioners fromHavana. The course will be in English. Please share this with other students that may be interested.

*The course will be in-person, on-campus. Some guests will participate virtually.
