Please join the Prince George’s County Planning Department for a virtual Speaker Series event on Wednesday, May 20th at 1:30 p.m, featuring historic preservation planner (and Commission colleague) Kacy Rohn!

About the event: 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which guaranteed that the right to vote could not be denied on the basis of sex. With many local governments and community organizations seeking to identify local historic sites associated with the women’s suffrage movement, this program will highlight the challenges and opportunities in the preservation of these sites of activism. The discussion will include Maryland’s history of suffrage activism, the omission of women from state and local inventories of historic sites, and the complexity of commemorating a movement which left African American women behind.

About the Speaker: Kacy Rohn is a Historic Preservation Planner with Montgomery Planning. Her research into the place-based history of the Maryland women’s suffrage movement has uncovered over fifty historic sites around the state where Maryland women fought for the right to vote. She is a 2017 graduate of the University of Maryland’s dual master’s program in Community Planning and Historic Preservation. In her role with Montgomery Planning, Kacy performs historic research and public outreach to preserve and promote the county’s historic and cultural resources.
