This year has manifested feelings of isolation, misunderstanding, and disconnection from others. Life now lacks variety and chance encounters, due to a necessity for purposeful outings, and lifestyles that promote individuality.
Monuments demand that communities of varying beliefs accept the shared celebration of symbols and experiences. This design challenges monument-as-object by extrapolating monument into a spatial condition, by fostering variety that creates inclusive space.
Field of Serendipity generates a framework of intersecting spatial grids, by weaving a variety of incidental encounters as an urban-scale park. The topography reveals a series of multi-scalar totems, which bisect an undulating scaffolding. The notion of monument lies within the moments of our individual and collective experience.
The field condition of repetitive markers symbolizes a larger whole, which encourages the recognition of belonging. Large monolithic elements disrupt the mundane, in order to create unique moments for serendipitous group intimacy. Carving through these elements is the weaving scaffolding, which breaks the grid and facilitates connections that are otherwise unseen. Personal choice through this spatial variety of scale and form endeavors to connect the individual to a larger culture.
