The National Trust for Historic Preservation has selected University of Maryland graduate students Imania Price and Jamesha Gibson for the 2015 Mildred Colodny Diversity Scholarship. The scholarship, which includes up to $15,000 in financial assistance, a paid summer internship with the National Trust and attendance at a National Preservation Conference or other training opportunities, recognizes outstanding achievement and commitment in U.S. preservation and potential to increase diversity within the field.
“This is an outstanding achievement,” said Don Linebaugh, Director of the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation’s Historic Preservation Program. “I am thrilled to see Imania and Jamesha’s dedication to preservation honored in such a deserving way.”
Imania and Jamesha were selected from “a robust pool” of over 25 entries, with candidates applying from historic preservation, urban planning, history and architecture programs from across the country. Imania begins her second year with the program this fall and spent her summer interning with the Maryland Historic Trust in their Cultural Resources Hazard Mitigation Program. Jamesha Gibson begins a master’s degree with the Historic Preservation Program this fall. She is currently an editorial intern for the National Trust, contributing regular posts to the Trust’s blog.
“The Mildred Colodny scholarship means I will be able to complete my historic preservation degree at the UMD,” said Imania. “I will be able to work with one of the country's leading non-profit agency on historic preservation on topics of diversity and sustainability, and I can use this opportunity as a platform to become a successful expert in the historic preservation field. It’s an honor to have been selected.”
The National Trust for Historic Preservation has awarded 22 Colodny Scholarships since its inception in 2002; Imania and Jamesha are the second and third students (respectively) from UMD to receive this prestigious award. HISP alum Najah Duvall is a previous recipient as is MAPP faculty Brent Leggs. To learn more about the Mildred Colodny Scholarship, visit the National Trust website.
