As the song goes, it’s the most wonderful time of the year. People, parties and much-needed time off await as we move into next week’s holiday season with reckless abandon. But, for those still scrambling to finish last-minute shopping, next week hangs like a looming specter. Struggling to find that perfect gift for the designer, preservationist, planner or developer in your life? (Or alternatively, looking to fill your own wish list?) We’re here to help. Below are some suggestions from MAPP faculty and staff that will surely bring joy to your world:
Sketchbook: “Because designers always need to sketch,” says Professor of Architecture Madlen Simon, who recommends a Moleskine (unlined) or the hip linen-wrapped version from Shinola. Top that off with…
Interesting pens or pencils: “These are great for the old-school architect or planner, who still likes to work by hand,” said Librarian Cindy Frank. Fun choices abound online, but we like these pencils from Rustico, which can be held in this SoHo-inspired container from MOMA.
Good coffee: This was something everyone at the school agrees on. Shop local with Compass Coffee or Vigilante.
Laser measuring tape: Whether you’re measuring a client’s space, mapping an 18th century farmhouse or are just a rabid DIY-er, a laser measure is a must-have for your tool box, according to Dean Don Linebaugh. “It provides a measurement within a 16th of an inch!”
A drone: Not just for kids anymore, drones are an increasingly handy tool on the job site, helping developers get a better sense of property lines or providing preservationists unparalleled vantage points of rooftops and historic landmarks. “As long as I don’t have to buy one for Dennis [Pogue], I’d highly recommend this gift for the preservationist or developer in your life,” says Program Assistant Laura Steeg.
An experience: A membership to the National Building Museum, tickets to the Kennedy Center, an architecture tour of our nation’s capital, or a tour/tasting of one of the many local distilleries or breweries make fun gifts you can enjoy together.
Data-storing cuff links: Keep your deals close to the vest with 8GB USB cuff links, perfect for storing any proforma, according to Carrie Chard, assistant director for the Colvin Institute of Real Estate Development.
Art: “I love this print by Pat Kim, or really anything from him!” says Assistant Director of the Architecture Program Lindsey May.
A well-designed alarm clock: This is the top present pick by Graduate Admissions & Advising Specialist Greg Weaver, who has seen many a student sleep through his “phone,” the alarm of choice for Gen Z. Also great for heavy sleepers and snooze-button addicts.
Atlas Obscura, Second Edition: Part history book, part treasure hunt, part travel guide, Atlas Obscura, 2nd Edition: An Explorer's Guide to the World's Hidden Wonders (based on its popular website) highlights the secret spots and beautiful gems of our natural and built environment.
MAPP 50th Anniversary Gear: T-shirts, mugs and the commemorative book are all available! Come back to MAPP and grab your gear in person for a dose of nostalgia.
