A design concept that re-envisioned an airfield in Howard County was recognized for design excellence at the 2021 UNBUILT Awards, presented by the Washington Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA|DC). “Continuities: The Columbia Air Center Interpretive Center,” created by architecture graduate students Juanita Li, Gesine Pryor-Azevedo and Eric Resnick, was one of six designs recognized by the jury this year.

The UNBUILT awards recognize excellence in academic, theoretical and other projects that, to date, remain unbuilt. The competition is open to registered architects, associate architects, landscape architects, planners, interior designers and students from the Washington metropolitan region.

“Continuities” was part of the Fall 2020 600 Studio taught by Amy Gardner, Julie Gabrielli, Carl Bovill and Ming Hu, in partnership with the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission. Melding sustainable design, surrounding ecology and heritage, the concept envisions a place of learning and remembrance for the grounds of the Columbia Air Center, the first Black-owned and operated airfield in the U.S., home to the Washington, D.C. Cloud Club.
