“No matter what you do to them, you're still putting earrings on a pig.”

Matt Bell

Professor of Architecture Matthew Bell, FAIA, weighed in on five different design ideas posed for Baltimore’s Inner Harbor in an interview with Baltimore’s Fox45. A principal at design firm Perkins Eastman and a contributing architect on the redesign of Washington’s District Wharf, Bell suggested urban designers tear down the existing pavilions that block water views and start from scratch. “No matter what you do to them, you're still putting earrings on a pig,” he said. Bell also suggested carving the harbor into smaller, more intimate spaces and offering a mixed-use program that is attractive and valuable to locals. “One of the things that I think has always been problematic about the Inner Harbor is that the use is catered really to visitors from out of town rather than people who actually go there on a daily basis.” Read the story here.
