UMD Architecture Students, Faculty and Alumni Recognized at 2016 AIA Maryland Design Awards

A sustainable urban headquarters for an animation studio, placemaking on a neglected site in Richmond and the reactivation of the Tigris River in Baghdad were three of the student projects recognized for design excellence this year by AIA Maryland during the AIA Maryland 2016 Excellence in Design Awards. Four Master of Architecture students were recognized for architectural achievement in this year’s showing: Erin Barkman, Emily Latham and Jennifer Chorosevic, and 2016 M.ARCH graduate Kenneth Filler. In addition, several UMD alumni were recognized for both residential and commercial design achievement. Winners were celebrated September 22nd at a ceremony in Baltimore.

“We are thrilled to have another formidable showing at AIA Maryland’s Excellence in Design Awards,” said Brian Kelly, Director of University of Maryland’s Architecture Program. “It is a true testament to our student’s hard work, creative judgement, innate talent and the excellent guidance provided by our faculty.”

The four UMD student winners were among 11 student projects recognized this year out 85 submissions. Barkman and Latham’s conceived headquarters for the L.A.-born animation company Pigmental Studios doubles as an inspirational workplace and community asset. Boasting both sustainable and socially-driven design, their project, recognized by AIA Maryland with a Design Award, also won an AIA COTE award this past spring. Recent graduate Kenneth Filler’s use of mixed media to convey his project set in Richmond, VA, which included stunning hand-drawn representations, earned him a Jury Citation. Jennifer Chorosevic also picked a Jury Citation Award for her project, Pocket Ecologies, a riverfront design in Baghdad developed as part of the Bridging the Gap Studio this past Spring. Chorosevic’s project was selected by Gensler for design excellence in May, earning her an internship at their Washington, D.C. offices later this year.

Several UMD alumni—including Jordan Goldstein (B.S. Architecture ’94) of Gensler; Stephen L. Parker, AIA (B.ARCH ’72) of Grimm+Parker; Aley Wilson (B.S. Architecture ’09, M.ARCH ’11) of Ayers Saint Gross; Mark McInturf, FAIA (B.ARCH ’72); and Brian Grieb (B.S. Architecture ’99, M.ARCH ’01) and Alick Dearie (B.S. Architecture ’99, M.ARCH ’04) of GriD Architects, took away design awards in the professional categories. In addition, UMD Clinical Professor of Architecture Amy Gardner and Lecturer Brittany Williams (B.S. Architecture ’05, M.ARCH ’07) took the People’s Choice Award this year for a stunning residence constructed on the Intracoastal Waterway.

The AIA Maryland Design Awards recognize the outstanding architectural achievements of architects, building owners, general contractors and architectural students. This year’s jury comprised six architecture professionals from AIA Kentucky.

“This is a wonderful achievement for our MAPP community, in a competition that continues to showcase the region’s best talent in our field,” said David Cronrath, Dean of the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. “It’s rewarding to see our students recognized for their thoughtful design and creativity by professional associations like the AIA. We are very proud of their achievements.”
