For the fourth time since 2010, a group of architecture graduate students embarked on an extensive study program of the architectural marvels of the region of Scandinavia. Led by Professor of the Practice Peter Noonan and Professor Emeritus Karl Du Puy (deceased), students spent four weeks experiencing the vibrant cities and beautiful countryside of Finland, Sweden and Denmark. Preceded by a series of seminar meetings and research in College Park, the trip allows students to see classroom concepts manifested in the cityscapes, historic places and iconic architectural treasures that dot the Scandinavian landscape.
As Professor Noonan explains, by taking students out of the classroom and into the streets, they are able to see and experience how culture and place influence some of the most significant architecture in the world. “This educational experience of a lifetime allows our students to take what's been focused on in the studio during the academic year and see it up close. The city and buildings become their classroom, and the midnight sun encourages sketching both day and night.”
