Investigation of the relationship between the city, the institution and the values of our society as represented by those institutions. Architecture can be understood as not just the pragmatic structures of a utilitarian society which serve functional needs, but also as the physical record of the values of a culture. The architect operating in these circumstances must be aware not just of the formal attributes of a particular context, but also of the assumptions, aspirations and values of the society which produced the buildings, cities and landscapes within which we work.
The projects explore the relationship between movement and places of assembly, including architectural promenade, sequences of spaces, public/private, and hierarchies of circulation. The complex program presents a packaging problem, as well as a challenge to retain a holistic sense of architectural intentions, spatial types and symbolic meaning.
