EFC's Sustainable Maryland program is partnering with Prince George's County Department of the Environment to help implement the County's Pet Waste Management initiative. The twin goals are to educate county residents about the issue of pet waste and install infrastructure that will help communities address the problem.
As part of the initiative, partner communities commit to installing, maintaining, and monitoring pet waste stations as well as promoting pet waste management throughout their community. Participating towns also monitor the stations in order to gather usage data. This data helps the county estimate the amount of harmful bacteria being diverted from local waterways through the Pet Waste Management initiative. In addition to pet waste stations, customized educational materials, branded with the “Scoop That Poop” logo, are also provided to the communities. These educational materials are then shared with residents via municipal websites, social media, listservs, newsletters, and events.
