Improving Capacity: Options for Virginia's Capital Region Land Conservancy

virginia river

The Capital Region Land Conservancy (CRLC) is a Central Virginia land trust focused on the land preservation needs of the City of Richmond and seven surrounding counties ‐‐ Chesterfield, Henrico, Hanover, Goochland, Powhatan, New Kent, and Charles City County. As a part of the technical assistance that the Defenders of Wildlife and the National Park Service provided to CRLC, the Environmental Finance Center at the University of Maryland (EFC) worked with program partners and CRLC staff and board members to develop a set of suggested steps for growing the organization and expanding its impact in the organization’s service area. Based on an analysis of existing capacity and revenue and consultation with CRLC staff and program partners, the EFC suggests the following: (1) Create efficiencies that reduce costs and ensure wise resource investment; (2)Strategically recruit new board members and volunteers; (3) Diversify the revenue stream; and (4) Enhance and expand partnerships.
