Global Studio Collaborations are a series of joint workshops with partner universities, where students in design studio can collaborate directly with their peers across the globe.
In Spring 2024 the UMD Architecture Program is hosting a series of Global Collaboration Workshops: joint workshops and design charrettes with a range of international partner universities. These collaborations will allow students at comparable levels of their design education—but from different parts of the world—to learn and participate in a series of joint design exercises and virtual dialogues. Partner institutions include: Uganda Martyrs University, PIADS Nagpur (India), The American University in Cairo, Egypt and the University of Engineering & Technology in Lahore, Pakistan.
These workshops are intended to inspire students’ curiosity about other cultures and design institutions. Students are able to share and exchange thoughts and ideas through collaborative design-thinking exercises. By developing a more global mindset, University of Maryland students can create more equitable spaces, and consider more broadly their project's relationship to a larger context. This pilot program is one of the first steps to diversity and internationalize the undergraduate and graduate student curriculum, following in the footsteps of studios such as Madlen Simon’s Bridging the Gap ARCH601 studio, which has been co-taught with students in Iraq.
